What to Do In a Dental Emergency

When experiencing a dental emergency, call our office and let a team member know what has happened. We’ll make sure you know how to handle the situation while you wait to see one of our dentists.

When arriving at our office, you’ll be escorted to a treatment room where we will take scans and images of your mouth before helping alleviate the pain you’re experiencing. Once we create a treatment plan, we’ll begin administering care on the same day if possible. If more extensive procedures are required, we will schedule your treatment at a later time.

The Most Common Dental Emergencies

Many common dental emergencies can be treated in our dental office in San Jose. From cracked and knocked-out teeth to chronic jaw pain, sensitive teeth, and loose permanent teeth, we can provide efficient treatment and offer tips to help you manage the pain at home.

Toothaches

Is My Toothache a Dental Emergency? Oftentimes, patients are quick to take the “wait and see” approach. However, the more time that passes, the worse the root of the problem will get. For that reason, we recommend contacting us right away, especially if you feel a sharp pain when you bite down.

How You Should Handle a Toothache: Scheduling an appointment with us is important, even if it’s not the same day. To alleviate any discomfort you’re experiencing in the meantime, we recommend rinsing with warm saltwater, placing a cold compress against the outside of your cheek, and taking OTC pain medication as directed on the label.

How We Treat Toothaches: There isn’t a one-size-fits-all treatment for toothaches. That’s why your dentist in San Jose needs to take X-rays and complete a visual exam! Once they’ve determined what the root of the problem is and how severe the damage is, they can discuss the different restorative services that we offer and share which one they recommend.

Cracked Tooth

Is a Cracked Tooth a Dental Emergency? Yes, a cracked tooth is considered a dental emergency, even if it’s relatively minor. So, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team at Caring Cove Dental. That way, we can schedule a same-day appointment and share how to handle this dental injury in the meantime.

How You Should Handle a Cracked Tooth: It’s crucial that you don’t do anything that could cause your tooth to break further, like eating croutons, raw carrots, or anything else crunchy. Instead, stick to soft foods, avoid chewing on that side of your mouth, and rinse periodically with clean, room-temperature water. If you’re in pain, you can take OTC pain medication to ease your discomfort temporarily.

How We Treat Cracked Teeth: Just because your tooth is cracked doesn’t mean it’s beyond saving. In fact, we may be able to restore the health, strength, and appearance of yours with a dental crown! If that’s not an option, then we will need to extract it before putting a dental bridge or implant in its place.

Chipped Teeth

Is a Chipped Tooth a Dental Emergency? Sometimes! For instance, if the chip is severe enough that you’re dealing with considerable sensitivity or discomfort, then it warrants an emergency visit to our dental office in San Jose.

How You Should Handle a Chipped Tooth: In addition to calling us, we recommend collecting any small pieces of your tooth in a clean container, rinsing your mouth gently with room-temperature water, and covering the sharp edge with some dental wax or sugar-free gum.

How We Treat Chipped Teeth: We can restore the missing structure of your tooth with dental bonding, a dental crown, or a veneer. The one we recommend for you will depend on a few factors, starting with the type of tooth and the severity of the chip.
